Joint solutions with practical applications for renewable energy use in cross-border area

About the Project

The RESolution project is a collaborative initiative under the Interreg VI-A Romania–Hungary Programme, aiming to promote sustainable energy solutions and enhance environmental quality in the cross-border region. By fostering cooperation between Romanian and Hungarian partners, the project seeks to implement innovative strategies for renewable energy adoption and energy efficiency.

Common Challenge

The RESolution project addresses the common challenge of transitioning to a carbon-neutral, secure, and independent energy economy in the Romania-Hungary cross-border region. This challenge aligns with the Interreg VI-A Romania-Hungary Programme's focus on reducing greenhouse gas emissions and increasing renewable energy sources (RES) shares, as outlined in the respective National Energy and Climate Plans 2030 of both countries.

The programme area, characterized by its high potential for geothermal district heating and photovoltaic energy, presents an opportunity to exploit these resources more effectively. However, as noted in the programme,
"although the renewable energy potential is substantial, this potential is not fully exploited."

Overall Objective and Expected Change

The RESolution project aims to harness this untapped potential by implementing innovative energy solutions. The project's objective is to enhance energy efficiency and increase the use of renewable energy, thereby contributing to the overall European goal of reaching at least 32.5% improvement in energy efficiency by 2030.

The expected change includes a more balanced energy grid, reduced environmental impact, and improved energy efficiency in public buildings, aligning with the EU Green New Deal's target towards EU Climate neutrality by 2050.

Main Outputs and Beneficiaries

  • Mobile batteries with high storage capacity for efficient energy management.
  • A comprehensive hydrogen strategy and plans for a green hydrogen energy system in Békéscsaba.
  • Renovated public building in Oradea with integrated renewable energy systems.
  • A joint strategy and action plan for sustainable mobile battery utilization.
  • Knowledge exchange and best practices in renewable energy management.
Beneficiaries encompass local authorities, event organizers, public building operators, and the broader community in the cross-border region, who will gain from improved energy solutions and sustainable practices.

Approach and Need for Cross-Border Cooperation

The RESolution project embodies a cross-border approach, essential for addressing transnational energy challenges and environmental sustainability. This cooperation enables sharing knowledge, resources, and best practices between Romania and Hungary, fostering innovation and ensuring a comprehensive approach to tackling shared energy challenges.

The Interreg Programme emphasizes the importance of such collaboration, stating that
"investments in regenerable energies under the Interreg VI-A Romania-Hungary Programme may contribute to create a favourable, enabling, environment for further developments of the renewable energy in the area."

Innovation and Originality

The RESolution project introduces several innovative and original elements to address energy and environmental challenges in the Romania-Hungary cross-border region, aligning with the strategic objectives of the Interreg VI-A Romania-Hungary Programme.

  • Innovative Use of Mobile Batteries: A pioneering aspect of the project is the utilization of mobile batteries charged with solar energy. This approach is particularly relevant given the Programme's emphasis on the high photovoltaic energy potential in the region. The mobile batteries offer a flexible solution to energy storage and grid stability challenges, especially during peak solar production hours.
  • Comprehensive Hydrogen Strategy: The development of a hydrogen strategy and the planning of a green hydrogen energy system in Békéscsaba is a groundbreaking initiative. This strategy aligns with the European commitment to sustainable energy sources and positions Békéscsaba as a leader in the transition to a low-carbon economy.
  • Renovation of Renewable Energy Centre in Oradea: The project includes the renovation of a renewable energy center in Oradea, utilizing a smart combination of geothermal energy and solar energy. This renovation represents a model for energy-efficient building solutions and demonstrates a practical application of combining different renewable energy sources for maximum efficiency and sustainability.
  • Tailored Strategy and Action Plan: The development of a joint strategy and action plan for sustainable mobile battery utilization is an original contribution of the project. This plan serves as a blueprint for current initiatives and a guide for future sustainable energy projects, ensuring long-term impact and adaptability.
